About Us
History
The Good Samaritan Shelter, Inc. is a private non-profit, non-denominational organization that is based on Christian principles. It was developed in 1999 under the guidance of Bishop William H. Washington, Jr., pastor of New Beginnings Church of God. His call for leadership was answered by St. Peter’s United Church of Christ of Chester Springs, the Baptist Church in Phoenixville, and other community supporters.

Together they sought a compassionate response to the needs of homeless men who frequently contacted local churches for emergency shelter.

Greater Phoenixville Area
The Phoenixville Area includes: Phoenixville, Spring City, Mont
Clare and neighboring areas of Chester County, Pennsylvania. As a non-profit organization (501c3), the shelter is dependent on financial support from the local churches, foundation grants and general donations.

Local Needs Addressed
Our shelter is one of only six in Chester County; others are mainly in the western, central, and southern areas of the county. We are, therefore, the primay men's shelter providers in northern Chester County. Similarly, our Transitional Housing is one of only four county transitional programs.

Capacity
The Good Samaritan Shelter has three homes: one for homeless men that can accommodate 4-5 men, and
two transitional houses that can accommodate up to seven men. We served 42 men last year, but turned away another 72 because of lack of space.

If Good Samaritan Shelter Did Not Exist
42 men would live on the streets, where they would be vulnerable to: drugs, alcohol, unhealthy food victimization, harsh weather conditions, and rampant illness.
